For a reader there is nothing better than being able to talk with a writer about his/her work.
On November 2nd at the Hermitage Artist Retreat located just south of Middle Beach, a gathering of readers spent a stimulating morning discussing THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY with its author, Tony Eprile.
Present were members of three book discussion groups on Manasota Key, one group from Palm Island and a number of Friends of the Hermitage. This was the first book discussion of its kind in the new Palm House, and it was a splendid event. Tony broadened the readers’ understanding of apartheid in South Africa through the memorable characters he created in his award-winning novel.
More literary events are planned for the future whenever there is an author in residence whose writing lends itself well to discussion. If you are not currently receiving monthly newsletters from the Hermitage, go to hermitageartistretreat.org and subscribe. The only requirement for attending a book discussion is that you read the book.
If you haven’t seen the Palm House, the newly acquired building on the south side of the Hermitage campus, plan on attending an event there. Jacobina Trump’s paintings, currently on display, magically bring the outside into the great room that overlooks the gulf through a tropical forest of palm trees and plants.
The Hermitage Artist Retreat is a jewel in the crown of Manasota Key. It’s like having an internationally recognized art colony in our backyard. Plan to take advantage of the free world-class cultural events that will take place there in the new year. Hoping to see you there!
